Using traditional gansey stitch patterns, this shawl is an ideal way to use up yarn left over from other projects. Or work it all in one colour!

Materials
470 g 6 ply sock yarn or
450 g Frangipani 5 ply wool
(the details of the exact quantities used of each colour is shown on the pattern)
4 mm needles
thin needle for picking up stitches
row counter
stitch markers


Size
The shawl is made up of two triangles with a total hem length of 140" and a top edge of 82".The perpendicular length from the start of the shawl to the hem in each triangle is 20".


Tension
20 sts to 4" over stocking stitch. The exact row tension varies with the different patterns, but the 15 rows of the large diamonds on Chart Three measures 2" deep.


Construction
The shawl is knitted from the centre back down. It is made up of two triangular wings with a 1 st border on the outside edges of the shawl. There are increase at each end of each wing on EVERY ROW – in other words there are 4 stitches increased on every row. Note that if a smaller garment is required, the shawl can be completed after finishing any pattern by working 4 rows in garter stitch.

Two shawls are shown, one knitted in 6 ply sock yarn and one in Frangipani 5 ply. Both are striped and the sequences used are given after the main pattern. DK yarns can also be used.
