Gansey patterns form the basis of these scarves. They have a ribbed section round the neck, and are ideal to tuck into the neck of jackets. The patterns are all double sided. There are 5 scarves in both men and boy’s sizes, and one in one size only. Instructions are also included to make conventional scarves from the stitch patterns.


Things you need to know to make the scarves

Materials

For each Scarf
about 100 g ColourMart DK or heavyweight DK yarn (see note below) for an Adult scarf
about 70 g ColourMart DK or heavyweight DK yarn (see note below) for a Boy’s scarf
two 4.5 mm needles (US 7)
row counter

Measurements and Tension

Each adult scarf is about 48 ins long (adjustable) and the boy’s 32 ins (adjustable). Most adult scarves are about 40 sts and 7 ins wide, but the Orkney Gansey pattern tails are 8 ins wide. Most boy’s scarves are about 5.5 ins wide.

Notes

Type of yarn: The scarves can be made from any of ColourMart’s DK and heavy weight yarns, or 2 strands of the 4 ply yarns, or 4 or 5 strands of lace weight.

Weight of Yarn: The exact weight required depends on the yarn and the length of scarf.
One 100 g ball of the 30% cashmere 70 % wool makes one adult scarf exactly – if you tend to be a loose knitter you will need more yarn.

Straight Scarves: The patterns can be used for straight scarves. You will need 2 x 100 g balls or 1 x 150 g cone for a 48 ins straight scarf.
