The Stitch Patterns
Instructions are given for a variety of patterns. They are in increasing order of difficulty – but all are straight forward. All have pattern only on the odd numbered rows, with the even rows being plain knit or purl. Most of the patterns can be made "double sided" by knitting the alternate rows rather than purling.
These are old Shetland patterns. They were used to make garments to sell, and therefore it was important that the patterns, while looking complex, were actually straightforward to knit! The women and girls would knit anywhere and everywhere, so they could not rely on written instructions: the next row had to follow on instinctively.
New Shell is a two row pattern, one of which is purl.
Horseshoe is an eight row pattern, including four purl rows.
Fir Cone is a twenty row pattern, but with only two pattern rows to remember.
Chequered Acre is a sixteen row pattern with only two pattern rows to remember.
Candlelight is a sixteen row pattern based on stocking stitch
