pdf pattern for the Orkney Robe of Glory
This is a traditional design used in Orkney for a crib, cot and/or pram cover. The front is knitted in the round with a steek, and the back is knitted to and fro, in stripes to use up the colours left over from the front. Adding initials and the date of birth is optional. Charts are given for all letters and numbers.
Materials
Patons Diploma Gold DK or other DK yarn:
200 g of the back ground colour and 50 g each of 6 different contrast colours to suit your pram.
Here the colours used are:
4 cream (BC), 1 each of charcoal, ginger, honey, delphinium, mermaid and airforce
3 and 3.5 mm (US 2 and 4) circular needles or dpns or sizes to get the right tension
pair 3.5 mm(US 4) needles
4 mm crochet hook
row counter
stitch markers
Size
About 20.5 x 28 ins, including the crochet edging (which is about 0.75 ins wide)
Tension
For the Front:
27 sts and 30 rounds to 4 ins for the Fair Isle work
27 sts and 36 rounds to 4 ins over back ground colour only rounds. (Note it is the STITCH number only which is important for the plain rounds.)
For the Back:
22 sts and 30 rows to 4 ins over stocking stitch.
