pdf pattern for the Cataria Ebook - A Special Outfit for Boys (which can also be worn by girls!) and Matching Shawl (instant download)
in cobweb yarn
I designed this set after folk moaned that while there were plenty of lovely things for girls, there were no special occasion sets for boys. This set is special, but not too lacy, and is very practical - the dungarees keep the clothing together as the baby is handed round!
Note that the shawl contained in the ebook is the Cataria shawl, not the white one in the photos of the sitting mannequin. That shawl is the Orkney PI, also available in my Etsy store.
Materials
150g / 2300 yd of yarn
(I used ColourMart 2/28 (see note below))
1 pair each 2 and 2.5 mm (US 0 and 1.5) needles
extra 2.5mm (US 1.5) needle
row counter
waste yarn
ribbon and/or shirring elastic as required, 5m/5yd
9 buttons, about 11mm diameter
Size
The set is very stretchy and will fit from about ages 3 months to 18 months. The standing mannequin is aged at 2 years old, and the sitting one at 18 months.
Tension
32 sts and 56 rows to 10x10cm or 4x4in (unstretched) over body and sleeve pattern (see p11) using 3.25 mm needles, or size required to obtain tension after washing and blocking.
Note
The pattern will work for most other ColourMart lace weight yarns, and cobweb or lace weight yarns from other companies with a yardage of about 1600yds per 100g. The yardage needed may vary. Be sure to check your tension.
The set consists of an angel top, dungarees and booties, plus the Cataria shawl.
Angel Top:
The body is worked in one piece to the armholes. The lace edging for the sleeves is worked, stitches are picked up from the straight edge, then the sleeve is knitted up from the cuff. The neckband is then worked. Finally, if required, the collar is worked and sewn to the neckband. As written, the buttons are at the back,
but the top can also be worn with the buttons at the front.
Dungarees: The bottom edging for each leg is worked first, and the leg is then knitted up to the crotch. After the crotch shaping, the stitches from both legs are worked together to the waistband. After the waistband has been worked, most stitches are cast off, leaving the stitches for the bib. The bib is then worked, followed by the two straps.
The Booties are worked in the tradition way from the top of the leg down.
The shawl is worked from the centre out. Once the centre and border have been worked, the lace is knitted on sideways.
