The Mystery Throw uses stitch patterns from Orkney ganseys, some of which are found elsewhere whilst others I have only seen in Orkney. It is made up of 20 cm/8" squares which can be sewn or crocheted together to make any sized afghan or throw.

There are patterns for 28 different squares, many of which are double sided.

The cushions are also made from the throw stitch patterns. There is a general pattern for different sizes onto which the throw patterns can be placed. There is a pattern for a buttoned back, or the front and back can be crocheted together enclosing the pad.



Materials
Frangipani 5 ply yarn:
100g makes 3 squares; 300g makes a 45 cm/18" cushion; 600g makes a 40 cm/24" cushion
pair 3.5 mm (US 4) needles
blunt needle or sewing up
stitch markers
crochet hook, size 3.5 mm, if required
cushion pad in the size required


Size
Each square is 20 cm/8". Cushion sizes are 40 cm/16" and 40 cm/24" square for all patterns.


Tension
24 sts and 36 rows to 10 cm/4" in 5 ply yarn over stocking stitch.
Note that row tension is not critical, but having a different tension will affect the yardage needed.
